Which free QR code generator should you choose?
Start with the job. A guest Wi-Fi card needs correct connection details. Branded packaging may need a logo and a particular print format. Choose the tool that makes your specific task easier.
QRToolset creates a code as you type and keeps PNG, SVG and sharing controls close by on mobile. It suits a quick file you want to save without an account. Compare both tools with the same destination before choosing.
When QRCode Monkey is the better fit
QRCode Monkey offers logo uploads, QR shapes, colors, and PNG, SVG, PDF and EPS exports. Its FAQ notes that PDF and EPS keep the classic design.
QRToolset offers custom colors, gradients, body and corner shapes, logo upload and PNG sizes up to 4,000 pixels. PNG and SVG preserve the design; PDF and EPS use classic vector modules. Scan-test the final design.
Where your QR content is processed matters
QRToolset processes your QR fields in the browser. QRCode Monkey says it caches generated images on its server for 24 hours and does not otherwise save or reuse the data. Read its policy for the full details.
Local generation keeps your input off a QR generation server. The finished image is still readable by anyone who receives it. QRToolset uses separate website analytics, described in its privacy policy.

Free and no expiration are shared benefits
Both products offer free static codes without a built-in expiry or scan limit. This is a shared benefit, not a reason by itself to choose one over the other.
Your destination still needs to work. If you delete the linked page or change an encoded password, make a new code. Keep control of the destination and test old artwork before reprinting.
When you need to change the link later
QRCode Monkey only makes static codes on its own site. For editable codes and scan tracking it points you to QR Code Generator PRO, a separate subscription with its own trial and terms.
QRToolset sells editable codes on the same site: 10 on Pro at $9 a month and 100 on Business at $19 a month. They open web pages and hosted files, and if you cancel they keep their last destination, so printed copies keep working.
Try the workflow before printing
Make a code for the same link in each tool. Save it on your usual device, scan the downloaded file and open the SVG in your print editor if needed. Compare the steps you actually need to complete.
QRToolset publishes this comparison and is one of the products compared. The linked official features were checked on 27 September 2026. We have not independently audited QRCode Monkey or benchmarked its speed.
Common questions
Is QRCode Monkey free?
Yes. It makes static codes for free without an account and says they work forever. It has no paid plan on its own site; dynamic codes and tracking are sold through its sister product, QR Code Generator PRO. QRToolset offers free static codes too, with paid editable codes on the same site.
Do QRToolset codes expire?
Static codes do not. The data is inside the image and does not depend on a QRToolset redirect, so a saved PNG or SVG keeps working even if this site later changes. Hosted files and editable links do depend on QRToolset staying online.
Which one has better design options?
Both offer colours, gradients, module shapes and logo upload at no cost. The practical difference is workflow: QRToolset generates in the browser without an account, so nothing is uploaded to create a static code.
Can I move my existing codes between generators?
A static code cannot be moved because there is nothing to move: the destination is encoded in the image and any generator will produce the same result from the same data. A dynamic code from another provider stays with that provider, since its redirect is theirs.
