QR code basics
Do QR codes expire? What actually breaks
A QR code image never expires, but the link or service behind it can. See what makes a code stop working and how to check yours before you print.

The QR code itself never expires
A QR code is a pattern of dark and light squares that encodes text: a web address, Wi-Fi details, a contact card. The format, standardised as ISO/IEC 18004, has no field for an expiry date and no way to switch itself off. A code printed ten years ago decodes exactly the same way today.
So when people ask whether QR codes expire, the real question is whether the thing the code points to is still there. That depends on which kind of code you made and where it leads.
Static codes last as long as their destination
A static code holds its data directly. A Wi-Fi, text or vCard code needs no internet and no server at all, so nothing can expire. A static website code opens the address inside it, so it works for as long as that address does.
Static codes stop working for ordinary reasons: the page was deleted or moved during a redesign, the domain was not renewed, a shared file was switched to private, a free link shortener closed the link, or the Wi-Fi password in the code was changed. None of these are expiry. They are broken destinations, and they can be fixed.
Dynamic codes depend on a subscription
A dynamic code encodes a short address on the provider’s domain. When someone scans it, the provider redirects them to your real destination. That is what lets you edit the destination after printing, and it is also why the code can stop: if the provider stops redirecting, every printed copy breaks at once.
Providers handle this differently, so read the terms before printing. As checked on 27 September 2026, QR Code Generator PRO says deactivated dynamic codes send scanners to a service page instead of your destination, Uniqode says dynamic codes become inactive when the free trial ends, and The QR Code Generator says cancelling deactivates the codes in your dashboard. QRCodeChimp pauses dynamic codes beyond your last 10 when a plan is not renewed, while Flowcode says older codes keep scanning after a downgrade.
On QRToolset, editable links keep their last saved destination if you cancel, with a short free redirect page before it opens. Editing and visit counting stop, but the printed code keeps working.

How to check a code you already printed
You do not need special tools. A phone and five minutes will tell you whether a code is at risk.
- Scan it with your phone camera and read the address it shows before opening. A link on a QR provider’s own short domain usually means a dynamic code.
- Open it on mobile data in a private browser window, so a saved login or cached page does not hide a problem.
- If it is dynamic, sign in to the provider and check the plan, the renewal date and what their terms say happens at cancellation.
- If it is static, check that the page, file or domain it points to is still yours and still public.
- Set a yearly reminder to rescan codes still in circulation, such as packaging, signage and business cards.
How to make a code that lasts for years
For anything printed in volume or fixed to a wall, use a static code that points to a page on a domain you own. You can change the page whenever you like, and the code never depends on a QR company.
Keep the original PNG or SVG with your artwork files, renew your domain automatically, and redirect old addresses when you redesign your site. If you really do need to change the destination itself, choose a dynamic provider whose cancellation terms you have read and can live with.
Common questions
Do QR codes expire?
No. The QR code itself has no expiry date. A static code works for as long as its destination exists. A dynamic code works only while its provider keeps redirecting it, which usually depends on an active trial or plan.
How long do QR codes last?
A static QR code can last indefinitely; the limits are the printed material and the destination behind it. A code that is faded, scratched or peeling may stop scanning, so replace damaged copies.
Can a free QR code stop working?
A free static code does not stop on its own. Free dynamic codes are different: many are tied to a trial or a scan allowance, and some providers deactivate or pause them when the trial ends or the allowance runs out.
How do I know if my QR code is static or dynamic?
Scan it and read the address before opening. If it shows your own website, it is almost certainly static. If it shows a short link on a QR provider’s domain, it is dynamic and depends on that provider.
